An ongoing challenge

Well, the budget didn’t bring us the news we were hoping for, but at a meeting the next day with Lords Mandelson and Myners as well as Stephen Timms, I raised our issues again, asking when they would turn their rhetoric of support into reality of delivery. I was asked to follow up my comments in writing, which I have duly done and am now awaiting a response.

Our seminars which are sponsored by Barclays start this week. Places are filling up: be sure to book yours - go to our website for further information.

Our Action Plan will be launched at a reception in the House of Commons on 20 May. We will be asking for ambitious but achievable support for the sector in both the short and long term. These are exciting times and I know, if we all pull together, we will reach our goals.

Conference places are also being booked up. The early bird offers end this week so make sure you get the best possible deal by Wednesday. This is the community development finance event of the year, so don’t miss it: book at www.cdfa.org.uk/conference.

Our recent leadership course was a resounding success - thanks to all those who took part. I have long believed we need to further develop our leadership talent and was delighted when DWP agreed to finance a programme tailor made for our sector. We plan to run more in the future so that we also develop potential leaders as well. This sector is here to stay.

On the home front
Oh dear: repeated attempts to stop my kitchen ceiling leaking, which culminated last Saturday in a whole plethora of male friends digging up my patio (the kitchen is in the basement, by the way, they weren’t digging up the patio to bury me underneath it), have come to nothing. I was working from home on Monday and watched another leak spring from a completely new part of the ceiling. It’s clearly an ongoing challenge. Bit like building the community finance sector, really!
